NORTH COUNTY WINS BIG
The Cavaliers "got the monkey off their back" today with a 10-0 shutout victory over the Skagit Valley Flyers. Cavalier goalie, Gunnar Groothuis had 19 saves and the first shutout of his high school career. But Gunz isn't the only player who shined in this game, his defenders had a hand in keeping the Flyers off the scoreboard. Beau Keown, Dylan Sweitzer and Keegan Way played strong all game. Edgar Mendoza won 11 of his 13 face-offs helping the team break the face-off percentage in a game record. Eric Conner had 2 goals and 1 assist and 7 very big ground balls, Colt Vrieling scored a one-timer on a nice feed from Gage Schulze. Julio Martinez had a hat-trick in the first half to go along with his 6 ground balls. Cody Braam got involved in the offense with 1 goal and 2 assists from the midfield position, and Jack Myers had 1 goal and 1 assist in the first game in which he didn't play long stick. "It was nice to finally put it all together" Coach Peter White said after the game. "We played great in the first half and I believe the way we played then would have kept us competitive against any team we have faced all year." The win improves North County's record to 1-6. The loss for Skagit Valley drops them to 0-7. The two teams will play again Wednesday May 6th at 7:00pm at Mount Vernon High School.
YOUNG CAVALIERS LOSE A TOUGH ONE
The Cavaliers had many chances to tie up the game after going down 2-1. Trevin Salminen finally tied the game with 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The flood gates opened however and Whatcom Gold took advantage scoring three goals in a span of 36 seconds. Trevin Salminen scored another goal with a minute left, but the last barrage of shots did not go in for the Cavaliers. The two teams split the series in what is the second of many close games between the neighboring programs.
